Cranford came to Summit sporting the second best record in the conference and everyone expected it to be a hard fought game. Both offenses sputtered early on their first possessions. However, on Cranford's second possession they really took it to the Summit defense. Cranford marched 80 yards in 18 plays to draw first blood. All 18 were running plays. While there were only two plays over 10 yard, Cranford moved inexorably down the field to score. It was something of a shock. Summit was unable to sustain a drive but neither could Cranford. With 1:40 left in the half Cranford intercepted a Summit pass and returned it all the way for TD. Summit had a number of opportunities to knock the play out of bounds but let him get away.

Now things began to get scary. It looked like Cranford was going to be up 13-0 at the half. However, Summit got serious and rose to the occasion. In the matter of 68 seconds Summit drove 61 yards to score with 32 seconds on the clock. AJ Iarussi opened by taking a pass from Bringewatt for 12 yards, Bringewatt ran for 19, Kyre Negron pick up 10, Iarussi ran for 18 to give Summit a 1st down at the 2. Two plays later Bringewatt scored to to get Summit back in the game at 13-7.

The whole 3rd quarter was a stand off, but Summit began to demonstrate that it could stop the Cranford running game. On the last play of the quarter Cranford was forced to punt from deep in their territory. As a result Summit started the 4th quarter with good field position at the Cranford 47. Summit decided to pound it out on the ground and eight plays later Summit was in the end zone. Mike Badgley's kick put Summit on top for the 1st time 14-13. But there was still 9 minutes of play left.

Cranford took the next kickoff at their 25 yard line. They started grinding it out and, aided by a 15 yard Summit penalty, got a 1st down at Summit's 23. Tension was mounting. The Summit defense stiffened and Cranford turned it back to Summit on downs at the 18 yard line with 4:12 left on the clock. Summit tried to run out the clock, but was forced to punt. Luckily, Cranford's receiver bobbled the ball and Summit took possession on the Cranford 38. It came down to a 4th and 4 at the Cranford 32.

Coach Liberato decided to go for a 49 yard field goal try with 44 seconds remaining. Even if it failed Cranford would have to go 80 yards with no time-outs. It is worth noting that the longest FG in Summit's history was 45 yards, set by Todd Locovare in 1988. Mike Badgley amazed everyone by nailing the kick, and setting a record that may never be broken. All in all it was a great comeback victory for the Hilltoppers

Stefano Stadlinger had a big game on defense with 12 tackles, 2 for a loss, and an interception. Logan Jefferies had 9 tackles, 1 for a loss, and Nick Oristanio had 8 tackles.
