Summit's new season got off on the wrong foot with a loss to Union Catholic. However, it was a very exciting and close game until Union Catholic pulled away late in the final quarter. Union Catholic had a significant height advantage under the hoop and it forced Summit to rely heavily on the 3 point shot. In fact 30 of Summit 58 shots were from outside the 3 point arc. Union Catholic grabbed a 13-10 lead in the first quarter, Summit reduced the deficit to 2 at the half and to 1 starting the final quarter. During those first three quarters Sophomore Ba'Shawn Mickens held the hot hand, scoring 20 of Summit's 36 points. Cris Cafiero score the first field goal of the 4th quarter to give Summit its first lead of the game. UC answered with 4 points to regain the lead. Curtis Slaght drained a 3 pointer to tie the score at 41-41, but it was downhill from there as UC had a parade of players going to the free throw line. Summit, as a team, was in foul trouble for all of the 4th quarter and UC had 14 free throws in the 4th quarter alone. For the game UC had 35 free throw attempts to Summit's eight.

In spite of the loss, this game highlighted some new varsity players. In his first varsity game, sophomore Mickens scored 23 points to lead all scorers. Also in double digits was Levi Glick, who only recently moved to Summit, with 10 points.

Note: There are differences between my scoring of the game and what appeared in the Star-Ledger. I am currently away on vacation until Christmas. I will try to reconcile the differences as soon as I return.
