| What a difference from the first meeting with St. Mary. Summit played with more energy, setting more picks and driving into the lane. It helped to be playing at home on a regulation size court. This meeting was loaded with drama and excitement. Summit took a 24-20 half time lead with a six point rush at the end of the half. Clayton Johnson contributed 10 of his 15 points to lead the 1st half scoring and Cris Cafiero scored 7. St Mary rallied in the 3rd quarter and entered the final 8 minutes with a 3 point lead.
A trey by Cafiero and a pair of FGs by Levi Glick allowed Summit to take a 43-41 lead. Two baskets by St. Mary were answered by a FG and free throw by Glick and the score was tied with 2:46 left. Four points from Cafiero was matched by 8 points from St Mary and with a 0:47 to go Summit was down by 4 points. Levi Glick narrowed the gap to 2 with 25 seconds on the clock. Terry McKenna's FG was answered by 3 free throws St. Mary. So, with 9 seconds to go Summit needed three points to send it to overtime. Just before the buzzer Cafiero launched a 3-point shot that looked good, but didn't go down. However, a whistle blew and a foul was called. So, with no time left, Cafiero stepped to the line and drained all three free throws to go to overtime. As you can imagine, the gym erupted when the last free throw went in.
In the overtime St. Mary built a 68-64 lead with less than a minute left. A free throw by Glick and a FG and a free throw by Cafiero tied the score and the game went to a second overtime. Unfortunately, St. Mary grabbed a big early lead and Summit wasn't able to catch up.
Cris Cafiero had a personal high 29 points to lead all scorers. Clayton Johnson (15 points) and Levi Glick (13 points) were also in double digits. Terry McKenna and Johnson each grabbed 9 rebounds.
