High Jump: Mark Jones, Summit, 6-7, 200, Senior
The Colorado-bound Jones, second on misses at the M of C in the high jump, was the only jumper in the state to make 6-10 when he repeated as state Group 2 champion. Jones also long jumped 23-6 1/4, No. 2  in the state this season.

Union County Performer of the year: Mark Jones cemented his place as one of the greatest  and most dominate athletes in Union County track and field history with another sensational season.

This past spring, Jones, a senior at , completed his memorable career with three victories at the Union County Championships (high jump, long jump and 100 hurdles), and three golds at the North Jersey, Section 2 Group 2 meet.

At the state Group 2 meet, Jones repeated as champion in the high jump by clearing 6-10, No. 1 in the state this season, won the long jump with a 23-0 1/2, and was third in the high hurdles. He had an off day at the Meet of Champions, placing second in the high jump on misses at 6-8.

The final numbers are staggering.

Over his career, the multi-talented Jones has piled up 12 county and 12 state sectional championships, six state group titles, three Meet of Champions titles and two national championships.

Although he's known mostly for his exploits in the high jump where he has won two national titles and cleared a personal best 7-0 1/4 this past winter, Jones also racked up multiple championships in the hurdles, long jump and triple jump. He has personal bests of 14.59 in the hurdles and 23-6 1/4 in the long jump, the latter was No. 2 in the state this season.

``I just liked to stay busy and keep competing no matter what event it was,'' said Jones. ``It's a lot more fun to be involved and work hard at something to accomplish your goals. I just wanted to be the best I could at everything I did.''

Make no mistake, the Colorado-bound Jones will go down as one of the greats in Union County history.

``I never really thought about all that kind of stuff when I was a freshman,'' said the 6-7 Jones. ``But after a made 6-9 in the high jump as a sophomore I started to realize that I wasn't that far from 7-0, so that became a huge goal. And the other events like the long jump and hurdles just kind of came with the fact that I am tall guy and could do some other things. It all turned out pretty good for me.''
