Monday 2/21 6:00PM Dayton 1st Round Conf. Tournament

@ Warinanco

Won 11-1 As expected Summit handily won the first round of counties 11-1 in a game shortened by the 10 goal rule.

Rather than expounding on who scored, it’s time to give the Hilltopper’s defenders their due. With a current record of 16-2-3, they have yielded 30 goals, less than 1.5 goals per game.

The defense is led by senior goaltender Jackson Stuckey, backed up by freshmen Garret McGowan and Max Graeb. Jackson has been steady and has held the team together in a number of games. The defensive pairings have generally been led by Mike Nyitray and Mike Santina, both of whom possess the strongest slap shots on the team, giving the Hilltoppers potent threats from the point on the power play. The second pairing has been very steady defensively. It consists of Travis Harden and newcomer to Summit, sophomore Tyler Young. Also filling in capably are Robert Bendock and James Strabley.

Without the steady work of the above 7 players along with excellent Hilltopper Nation support, the current record could not have been attained. It’s now on to round 2 of the Counties as well as the upcoming State Tournament whose seedings and matchups should be announced on Wednesday. Reported by Bill Yager

Tuesday 3/2 TBA NJSIAA Playoffs vs. Madison Won 6-5 Wow, Wow, WOW! For 2 periods Summit controlled the puck, keeping it in deep and had, by far, the greater number of shots, but Madison led after two periods by the score of 3-2. The puck was bouncing the Dodgers way. When Madison scored with 10 minutes left in the game, making the score 4-2, things looked bleak for Summit. Mike Nyitray scored with just over 7 minutes remaining on an end-to-end rush to give the Hilltoppers hope; however, Madison re-established the 2 goal lead soon thereafter. The Summit fans were thinking that the season was about to end. Michael Tsiang, who played a great all-around game, scored his second goal at 5:45 to pull the Hilltoppers within one and the Summit faithful were hoping for one more to put the game into overtime. At 4:11 Nyitray did it again, scoring on a breakaway, making the score 5-5. What a comeback! It stayed that way until, with 10 seconds left, a Nyitray’s blast found the back of the net, completing his hat trick and sending Summit onto the next round. This game was, as one coach described it, the greatest comeback in the last 20 years of Summit hockey.

Thursday 3/4 TBA NJSIAA vs. Verona Lost 2-1 Verona was very physical but Summit stayed with them. The first period was scoreless but over the next 20 minutes Verona found the back of the net twice while Summit was thwarted on their opportunities, even though they were outshooting the Verona. A goal by Jeff Wyckoff with a little over a minute left gave the Hilltoppers some hope. However, With no last minute goal, the Hilltoppers saw their season end with the Union County Cup but no state championship. They finished with a record of 19-3-3, one of the best records in Summit hockey’s history. Having only 3 seniors on the squad, next year should prove to be another exiting season.
