Hillside came to Summit for the Preliminary round of the Union County Tournament. The game was played in a cool drizzle. Will Brenn was the starting pitcher, but had to retire after the 1st inning with a sore shoulder. Hillside managed to score 2 runs in the top of the first on a couple of singles and a walk. However, Summit picked up 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st on no hits, 4 walks, an error, 4 wild pitches and a hit batter. All in all an ugly inning, but 3 runs are good to have no matter how they come.Summit added 3 more in the 2nd . Kevin Fries was walked, Seth Ryan singled, Sean Guida scored Fries on a sacrifice fly, Justin Vitti singled, Kyle Fries singled as did Mike Bredahl.
Summit scored 5 run in the 3rd. David Berardi got to 2nd on a error and scored when Kevin Fries singled. Ryan walked but was forced on a fielder's choice by John Floegel. Floegel stole second and both Kevin Fries and Floegel scored on a Guida single. Vitti singled and both Guida and Vitti moved to 3rd and 2nd on a wild pitch. The scored on an error by the shortstop. Summit added their 12th run in the 4th when Berardi walked, Kevin Fries got on via an error and Ryan doubled.
Robert Carbone, brought up from the JVs, replaced Brenn to start the 2nd inning and pitched an excellent 3 innings of 1 hit no run baseball. John Floegel pitched the 5th inning and set down the side 1-2-3.
