Summit took on Rahway on nice day for baseball. It was Summit's home opener. This was good baseball by a pair of evenly matched teams. A couple of errors by the Rahway shortstop spelled the difference. Andrew Oristanio pitched 6 nice inning giving up only 6 hits and 2 runs. He turned the mound over to Mike Nitzberg for the 7th inning with Summit leading 3-2. Nitzberg finished the inning, holding Rahway scoreless for the save, but not before there was significant excitement.
Rahway struck first with back to back doubles in second inning. Summit took the lead with 2 runs in the 3rd. Seth Ryan got via a shortstop error and moved to 3rd on Sean Guida's double. Another Rahway error by the shortstop allowed Ryan to score and Guida to move to 3rd. A subsequent pitch in the dirt allowed Guida to score.
Rahway tied the game in the 4th, combining 3 singles for a run. Summit regained the lead in the bottom of the 4th. David Barardi led off with a single that was mishandled by the center fielder, allowing Barardi to take 2nd base. He moved to 3rd on an infield ground ball and with 2 out scored on yet another error by the shortstop.
Summit carried the 3-2 lead into the top of the 7th, with Nitzberg on the mound in relief. Nitzberg got the leadoff batter to fly out the center. However, he walked the next two batters. A 6-4 fielder's choice moved the lead runner to 3rd with 2 out. Another walk loaded the bases. Now the tension was was high. With the count 2-2, the batter fouled off 3 straight pitchs, prolonging the agony. The batter sung and missed the next pitch. game over!
