This was a most unusal game against the always strong Scotch Plains. In the top of the 2nd Scotch Plains rang up 6 runs off four hits, 2 walks and a hit batter, more about that later. It looked pretty dark for Summit. However, Summit bounced right back scoring 7 runs off 6 hits and one hit batter. Then in the 3rd inning Summit added another run to take an 8-6 lead. Scotch Plains tied the game with 2 runs on 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 hit batters.
John Floegel relieved Andrew Oristanio to start the 5th with the game tied 8-8. Things didn't go well and Scotch Plains scored 7 runs via 5 hits, a walk and a hit batter. With the score now 15-8 things were looking pretty grim. Scotch Plains and Summit traded a run in the 6th, so now it was 15-9. Sean Guida had started pitching in the 6th and Will Brenn took over for the last out. Brenn continued to pitch the 7th inning. Unfortunately a pair of doubles, a walk and a wild pitch allowed Scotch Plains to score 3 more runs and seemingly put the game out of reach at 19-9.
The bottom of the 7th began with James Baumeister being hit by the pitcher. David Berardi singled as did Floegel ( his fourth hit of the game. With the bases loaded Nick Abbott singled to drive in a run and leave the bases loaded. Seth Ryan drew a walk and forced in a 2nd run. Nitzberg was safe on a error and that allowed two more runs to score. A single by Justin Vitti kept the rally alive. Kyle Fries was hit by the pitcher for the 3rd time in the game (that must be record of some kind) to reload the bases. This was getting exciting. Berardi stepped to the plate and drilled the first pitch for a double driving in all three base runners. WOW! Suddenly Summit, who started the final half inning with a 10 run deficit, now had brought the tieing run to the plate. There was a sense of panic in the Scotch Plains dugout and they called in their best candidate to stop the bleeding. He got the next batter on a 1-3 ground out and the game was over.
Summit out hit Scotch Plains but were undemined by the fact that the Summit pitchers issued 10 walks and hit 5 batters. Nine of the 15 wound up scoring. I think that also has to be some kind of record.
