Summit (14th seed) traveled to Westfield (3rd seed) minus 3 key starters who were away on a school trip. As you might expect, Westfield was heavy favorites. James Beaumeister was the starting pitcher and unfortunately didn't get the support needed. As a result the blue devils took a 3-0 lead in the the first three innings, all of them unearned, on 2 hits and 3 errors. Westfield added 4 earned runs in 4th to take a 7-0 lead after 4 innings.
Summit scored a run in the top of the 5th when Kevin Fries walked and took second on a wild pitch. He moved to 3rd on an infield out and scored on a 6-3 ground ball by John Floegel.
Floegel took over the pitching duties in the 5th inning and threw 2 innings of no hit, no run ball. So Summit came to bat in the top of the 7th needing an unlikely 6 runs to tie the game. They managed to score 3 runs with one out and had runners on 1st and 2nd with the tieing run at the plate. At this point Westfield brought in a closer who struck the first batter he faced and got the second to ground out. Summit's 3 runs resulted from a lead off single by Baumeister, walks to Tanner Fulton and Seth Ryan, and singles by Floegel and Sean Guida.
