4:00PM | Home | Bishop Ahr | Lost 8-5. In its season home opener at Memorial Field, Summit took a 5-2 lead in the 3rd inning with a 5-run 2-out rally, but let Bishop Ayr (Edison) back in the game allowing 2 unearned runs on a 2-out error in the 4th and 1 run in the 6th. A 3-run 7th inning by Bishop Ayr sealed the win. Summit was lead by the hitting of catcher Hunter Miller who went 3 for 4.
Tuesday, Apr 10 | 11:00AM | Away | Arthur L. Johnson | Won 8-4. Summit posted its first win of the season against A.L. Johnson (Clark) with solid pitching by Brian Cantillo and Michael Brown. Making his first start, Cantillo pitched 5 innings allowing 2 unearned runs. Brown finished the game in relief. Summit's 8 runs were sparked by center fielder Kyle Brown who went 3 for 5, and shortstop Jared Chang who went 3 for 4 with a walk.
Tuesday, Apr 17 | 4:00PM | Away | Scotch Plains-Fanwood | Lost 9-4. While posting 4 runs and playing adequate defense, untimely and too many walks undermined Summit's away effort against Scotch Plains. Summit catcher Hunter Miller again lead the offense with a solo inside-in-the-park home run blast.
4:00PM | Home | New Providence | Won 8-3. Solid pitching, timely hitting, steady defense and aggressive baserunning were all displayed by Summit on a picture perfect afternoon for baseball at Memorial Field. Pitcher Whit Cummings posted his first high school win allowing just 3 runs (2 unearned) over 5 innnings. Run support was supplied by RBI singles by left fielder Daniel Montgomery, center fielder Kyle Brown and catcher Hunter Miller in the 4th and 5th innings. And, in what turned out to be the decisive defense play of the game, Cummings, shortstop Brian Cantillo and 1st baseman Michael Maldonado turned a 1-6-3 double play in the 4th inning to thwart a potential rally by New Providence. Summit scored first in the 1st inning on aggressive base running by Jared Chang who scored from second base on a pitched past ball New Providence's catcher was slow to retrieve at Memorial's long backstop. Chang also aided Summit's defensive effort with a 4-3 double play in the 2d inning as a 2d baseman and, following a defensive realignment, made two nice plays as a 3d baseman in the 7th innning to help close out the win. Pitcher Owen Crowl was very effective in relief retiring the side in order in both the 6th and 7th innings. |

Friday, Apr 20 | 4:00PM | Home | Bergen Cty Tech | Won 9-3. In the bottom of the 3rd inning with Bergen Tech challenging Summit's 3-2 lead with bases loaded and one out, the message by Summit coach Will Hannis to relief pitcher Michael Brown at the mound was simple: keep us in this game. Answering the call, Brown did just that. After allowing just 1 run to score in the 3rd inning, Brown went on to pitch 4 scoreless innings to complete the game and post his first win as a high school pitcher. Buoyed by Brown's 3rd innning effort, Summit erupted for 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning on RBI hits byJared Chang, Hunter Miller and Michael Maldonado to take an 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the 4th inning with Bergen Tech runners on 1st and 3rd and none out, a rare 2-4-2 double play by catcher Miller and 2d basemen Chang on a double-steal attempt squleched a potential rally and put Bergen Tech on its heels the rest of the game. Summit scored another run in the 7th inning on another RBI hit by Maldonado. Centerfielder Kyle Brown continued his hot hitting going 3 for 4. Summit's starting pitcher was Jake Mokuvos.
Friday, Apr 28 | 4:00PM | Union City | Lost: 5-4 (8 innings). With Summit starting pitcher Brian Cantillo holding his own against an aggressive, free-swinging Union City line-up, Summit had a 4-3 lead after 5 innings. Right fielderDaniel Montgomery's two-run single in the 4th innning gave Summit the lead. However, Union City chipped away at Summit relief pitching and, after scoring one run in the 7th inning to tie the game, posted another run in the 8th inning to take a 5-4 lead. A Summit lead-off walk in the bottom of the 8th was erased with a fine pick-off move by Union City's left-handed pitcher. The game ended on a fly out with Summit runners on 2d and 3d. Montgomery finished the game 2 for 4 at the plate. Union City's pitcher, who featured a varsity-level breaking ball, went all 8 finnings for the win. Summit's defense continued its steady play. This is the 3rd consecutive game Summit has not made an error in the field.
Saturday, May 5 | 11:00PM | Home | Parsippany | Won 6-5. In a seesaw game which had four lead changes, Summit finally closed out Parsippany in the top of the 7th inning with a nice defensive play by 1st baseman Michael Maldonado to scoop up a low infield throw to get the final out. Summit's offensive was led by Zach Rissman who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Additional RBIs were produced by Daniel Montgomery, Hunter Miller and Maldonado. Summit's first run was produced by Jared Changwho, after singling and stealing second base, scored on a overthrow by Parsippany's catcher on Chang's steal of 3d base. Summit's defense again held steady with Rissman making 4 fly ball put-outs in right field. While having trouble with his control, starting pitcher Michael Brown kept Summit in the game through 4 innnings. Pitcher Sam Griffith got his first high school win coming in to relieve Brown in the 5th inning and finishing out the game. Summit will take a 4-3 record into the Hudson County Tournament with its opening game against Union City High School on Monday, May 7th.
Monday, May 7 | Away | Union City Hudson County Tournament |
Lost 7-4. Under an overcast sky at Laurel Hill Field in Secaucus, the situation was grim for Summit after 3 innings in its first-round game in the Hudson County Tournament. Summit had allowed Union City to score 7 unearned runs on erratic starting pitching, marred by walks and wild pitches, and fielding and throwing errors, and had only 1 hit on a bloop single by Jared Chang. Relief pitcher Michael Maldonado's appearance in the 3rd inning settled things down and, after scoring 3 runs in the 4th and 5th innings, Summit had clawed to within striking distance of getting back in the game. However, baserunning miscues in the 6th inning and again in the 7th inning, which resulted in only one additional run, stymied any chance of a comeback. Maldonado pitched 4 superb innings in relief to finish out the game and centerfielder Kyle Brown's bat, which had cooled a bit after a torrid start, got hot again with a double in the 5th inning for Summit's 2d hit of the game. |

saturday May 12 | Away | Millburn |
Won 6-5 (8 innings). At first blush, it appeared it would be a slugfest in this away game against an always tough Millburn team. Summit scored 4 runs in its first at-bat, 2 on a RBI double by Jake Mokuvos, while in the bottom of the frame Millburn responded with 2 runs off Summit pitcher Brian Cantillo. After the initial scoring, however, both sides settled down and by the 6th inning Millburn had evened the score at 4-4. In the 7th, Summit went ahead 5-4 on a RBI single by Owen Crowl but was cut down at the plate on the next play when he tried to score from second base on a right field single by Summit catcher Hunter Miller. Millburn came back and tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 7th with one run off Cantillo. With two runners on base, Summit pitcher Michael Brown appeared in relief and shut down Millburn with help from centerfielder Kyle Brown who made a spectacular play on a diving line drive. In the 8th and final inning, Summit scored on a throwing error by Millburn's pitcher trying to pick off a Summit baserunner at 1st base, making the game 6-5. Millburn placed a runner on base in the bottom of the 8th, but Summit closed out the game when shortstop Jared Chang deftly fielded a hard smash and threw to first basemanMichael Maldonado for the final out. Summit's offense was led by outfielder-lead off batter Daniel Montgomery who went 3 for 4. |

Monday, May 14 | 4:00PM | Away | Governor Livingston | Lost 6-2. Carelessness by Summit baserunners on the basepaths and while on base turned what could have been a nice win against a very strong Governor Livingston team into loss. Despite allowing GL batters to reach base in each inning he pitched, Summit pitcher Michael Maldonado managed to keep Summit in the game at 4-1 through 5 innings. Approaching the 100-pitch mark, Maldonado was relieved in the 5th inning and GL went on to score 2 additional runs to make the score 6-1. In the top of the 6th inning, a potential Summit rally was squelched when a Summit runner was thrown out at second base on a steal attempt and later a Summit runner was picked-off at first base. In the 7th inning, Summit had bases loaded with no outs but scored only 1 run when a Summit runner on third base was picked-off. In total, 4 Summit runners were either caught stealing or picked-off; and of the pick-offs, 2 were in scoring position with less than 2 outs. To be sure, this game was Exhibit A for the baseball axiom: "Don't run yourself out of the game." Three batter Kyle Brown continued his hot hitting, collecting 3 hits. One and two batters, Daniel Montgomery and Jared Chang, scored Summit's 2 runs.
4:00PM | Away | Elmwood PArk | Won 4-3. Summit pitcher Whit Cummings provided the Hilltoppers with its first complete game win scattering 3 Elmwood Park runs over 7 innings in an away game which was played under two hours. Trailing EP 1-0 after 4 innings, Summit erupted for 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning, 2 on a RBI hit by Michael Maldonado. EP, however, responded with 2 runs in the 6th inning to tie the score at 3-3. Summit scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th inning on another RBI hit by Maldonado driving in Daniel Montgomery who led off the inning with a double. Summit secured the win in the bottom half of the final inning with a Brian Cantillo (SS)-Jared Chang (2B)-Maldonado (1B) 6-4-3 double play, which was its second 6-4/3 DP of the game. Two batter Chang boosted an already high OBP drawing 3 walks in 4 at-bats. |

Friday May 18 | 4:00PM | Westfield | Lost 5-4. With the score 2-2 through four innings, Summit starting pitcher Brian Cantillodid a very good job of keeping Summit in this away game against perennial powerhouse Westfield. But after a pitching change because Cantillo had reached the 100-pitch mark, defensive lapses and errors by Summit allowed Westfield to score 3 unearned runs which a Summit two-run late innning rally could not overcome.
Saturday, may 19 | Away | Hunterdon Central | Lost 16-4. When Summit scored 3 runs in the top of the first inning, it appeared this would be a competitive game against a regional high school which always puts strong baseball teams on the field. It was not to be. Featuring a batting line-up with very good hitters from one to nine, Hunterdon Central Regional responded in the bottom of the first inning with 5 runs of its own and never looked back, scoring 11 runs over the next 4 innings. And after the shaky top of the 1st inning, Hunterdon's pitcher got his rhythm -- and breaking ball working -- allowing only one more Summit run and ending the game in the top of the 5th inning.
Tuesday, May 22 | 4:00PM | Home | Johnson
Wednesday, May 23 | 4:00PM | Home | Hunterdon Central | Lost 2-0. In this rematch game at Memorial Field, Summit pitchers were effective in keeping Hunterdon's strong batting lineup in check. Summit pitcher Michael Maldonado allowed two unearned runs (both in the 2d inning) through 5 innings while Whit Cummings pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief. The Hilltoppers, however, could not generate any offense. Except for Jared Chang who went 2 for 4 and David Bonomo who drew 2 walks in 3 at-bats Summit hitters were largely silent. The only scoring threat occurred in the bottom of the 6th inning when Summit loaded the bases but were unable to score.
Thursday May24 | 4:00PM | Home | Johnson | Lost 5-1. In its last game of the season, Summit again could not generate any offense to counter A.L. Johnson's (Clark) 5 runs and will finish with a 6-9 record. Those who will be receiving a freshman letter for the season are: David Bonomo, Kyle Brown, Mark Brown, Jr. (team manager), Michael Brown, Brian Cantillo, Jared Chang, Owen Crowl, Whit Cummings, Sam Griffith, Michael Maldonado, Hunter Miller, Jake Mokuvos, Daniel Montgomery and Zach Rissman. |
