Thursday, Dec 29 9:00AM Away Rahway  Summit placed 7th in the 10-team Rahway Holiday Tournament, with one individual Champion (Nick Abbott at 126 lbs) and two second place finishers (Elijah Akudugu at 120 lbs and AJ Iarussi at 195 lbs). 

Abbott won the tournament for the second year in a row by pinning Carteret's Michael Nowak in 1:45 in the quarterfinals, defeating Elizabeth's Ralph Stadtler 6-0 in the semifinals, and then pinning Blaze Rufo of Staten Island's Monsignor Farrell High in 2:25 in the Championship Finals. 

Freshman  Elijah Akudugu made a great showing to take second place by winning his quarterfinal match 8-2 over Jpe Vitale of Zavarian and winning the semifinals 5-2 over Joshua Sheehy of Linden, before losing in the finals to Isaac Valentin of Rahway. 

Iarussi secured a second place medal by pinning Xavarian's John Montmarano in 1:00 in the quarterfinals and winning 7-4 over AL Johnson's Sal Montuori in the semifinals before losing in the finals to Robert Clark of Linden. 

Other Summit wrestlers who recorded wins at the tournament were Nick Testa (113 lbs) who pinned Xavier's John Villa in 1:59, Diego Barquero (138 lbs) who pinned AL Johnson's Jake Burkert in 1:50, and Danny Kennedy (145 lbs) who defeated Xaverian's Lawrence Villanueva 8-6.

Saturday, Jan 14 9:00AM @NP Pioneer Classic Wrestling Tournament 7th Place Team.  Summit's wrestlers had a tough day at the Pioneer Classic wrestling tournament at New Providence, with 6 varsity starters unavailable to compete, and 3 injuries suffered during the action Saturday by those who did wrestle. 

The brightest spot was senior co-captain Chris Chavez at 160 pounds, who placed 2nd with a 1:20 pin over Eli Zafrani of Old Bridge in the quarterfinal followed by a 0:52 pin over Mark Stevens of Neptune in the semifinal before losing the finals to Wayne Meyer of St. Joseph (Montvale). 

Junior AJ Iarussi also placed 2nd at 195 pounds, winning the semifinals 6-4 with a last second takedown of Joshua Knight of Plainfield before losing the final to Dominic Carfago of St. Joseph (Montvale). 

Other Summit placewinners were junior Nick Abbott with a 3rd place finish at 132 pounds, sophomore Nick Testa with a 4th place finish at 113 pounds, sophomore Colm Dougherty with a 5th place finish at 152 pounds, and freshman Brian Peck with a 6th place finish at 106 pounds.
Saturday, Jan 21 9:00AM @Union Union County Tournament Delayed one day by a snowstorm, the Union County Championship wrestling tournament was held at Union High School on January 22nd and Summit had a county champion for the first time since the early 1990s. 

Junior Nick Abbott was crowned Union County Champion at 126 pounds, winning his quarterfinal match 6-4 over Justin Rodriguez of Linden, then the semifinals 3-0 over Ralph Stadtler of Elizabeth, before scoring a 3-0 victory in the finals over Isaac Valentin of Rahway. 

Summit's other county placewinner was junior AJ Iarussi, who placed 2nd at 195 pounds by pinning Roselle Park's Marc Signorello in 39 seconds in the quarterfinals and scoring a 4-1 victory over Joshua Knight of Plainfield in the semifinals before losing a very close 1-0 decision to Anthony Tancs of Brearley in the championship final.

Friday, Feb 17 TBD @Millburn District 10 Meet Summit's wrestlers finished 7th as a team in the District X tournament, with junior AJ Iarussi leading the way with a District championship at 195 pounds, sophomore Nick Testa placing 2nd at 113 pounds and junior Nick Abbott finishing 3rd at 126 pounds.

First seeded Iarussi had a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Marc Signorello of Roselle Park in the semifinals and won 3-1 in the championship finals over Nick Haboj of Madison to take the gold medal.

Third seeded Testa pinned Geoffrey Zorn of Chatham in the quarterfinals, then won a close decision over second seed Hugo Perraga of Roselle Park in the semifinal to reach the championship finals, where he lost to returning NJ state champ Brendan Calas of Seton Hall Prep.

Second seeded Abbott pinned Thaddeus Doyle of Irvington in the quarterfinals, then lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Millburn's Dylan Pollock in the semifinals, but recovered with a 3-2 victory over Seton Hall's Anthony Canfora in the consolation match to finish 3rd and qualify for the Region tournament.

Iarussi, Testa and Abbott all advance to the Region 3 tournament in Union, where the top three finishers in each weight class will qualify for the NJ State championship tournament to be held in Atlantic City the first weekend in March.
Wed Feb 22 @Union Region 3 1st round Summit had mixed results in the first round of the Region 3 tournament held at Union High School. 

At 113 pounds, sophomore Nick Testa advanced to the quarterfinals by winning on an injury default over Gene Angelo of Hanover Park. 

At 126 pounds, junior Nick Abbott lost 2-1 to Gennaro Cuccolo of Hanover Park, ending the season for Summit's Union County champion. 

195 pound District X champion AJ Iarussi had a bye in the first round. 

Testa and Iarussi continue their quest with the Region 3 quarterfinals slated to begin at 6pm Friday at Union, with the top three placewinners in each weight class qualifying for the state championship tournament in Atlantic City the following weekend
Friday Feb 24 @ Union Region 3 Quarter finals Summit had one wrestler advance to the Region 3 semifinals, with junior AJ Iarussi winning his 195 pound quarterfinal matchup 5-2 over Nick Haboj of Madison. A win in the semifinal Saturday would ensure Iarussi a trip to Atlantic City next weekend for the state wrestling championships.

Summit's other surviving Region 3 competitor, 113 pound sophomore Nick Testa, was defeated in Friday's quarterfinal by 3rd seeded Jon Mele of Governor Livingston, but will continue with the wrestle-backs Saturday and a shot at 3rd place and a ticket to Atlantic City.
Saturday Feb 25 @ Union Region 3 finals For the first time since the early 1990s, Summit High School will be represented at the New Jersey state wrestling championship tournament in Atlantic City. Junior AJ Iarussi qualified by placing 2nd in the Region 3 tournament at 195 pounds. In Saturday morning's semifinal, Iarussi won a 6-2 decision over Ives Viola of Colonia. The championship final was as close as they come, with Iarussi losing in triple overtime to Brearley senior Anthony Tancs. Next stop is the first round of the state championship Friday night in Atlantic City.

Summit's other remaining Region 3 competitor, sophomore Nick Testa, lost in the quarterfinal wrestleback to Charlie Hudak of AL Johnson to finish 7th/8th place in Region 3.
Friday Mar 2 Atlantic City NJSIAA Championships Summit's 195 pound junior AJ Iarussi took the mat Friday as the first representative of the school at the NJ state wrestling championships since 1994, and came through with a first round victory at the highest level of competition statewide (there is only one state champion in wrestling for all sections and schools in the state).  In the first round, Iarussi won an exciting match by a score of 3-2 in quadruple overtime against Matt Schofield of Barnegat.  Later in the evening in the pre-quarterfinal round, Iarussi lost to the eventual 4th place finisher Carson Stack of Haddonfield, sending him to the consolation wrestlebacks for his shot at a state medal.
Sat Mar 3 Atlantic City NJSIAA Championships 195 pound competitor AJ Iarussi's season ended in the preliminary wrestleback round at the state tournament in Atlantic City, where he lost 3-1 to eventual 8th place finisher Nick Gaeta of Nutley on a heartbreaking last second takedown.  All are proud that AJ was one of the last 16 wrestlers standing in his weight class in the entire State of New Jersey. 
Mar 31-Apr 1 Drexel U FLO National The Flo National Wrestling Tournament was held at Drexel University's Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, PA.  Over 700 high school wrestlers from 38 states across the country participated.  Summit's AJ Iarussi took 7th place at 195 pounds, winning 5 matches over national caliber wrestlers, including opponents from Pennsylvania and California. 

1st match was against Logan Stout of Pennsylvania.  AJ won 5 - 2

2nd match was against Jordan Sepeda of California  AJ won 6 - 2

3rd match was against Dylan Devine of Maryland AJ lost 3 - 1      (This was also the guy who took 1st in the tourney)

4th match was against Richard Sista of New York AJ won 4 - 2

5th match was against Boyce Comwell of Georgia AJ lost 6 - 0     (This was also the guy who took 3rd in the tourney)

6th match was against Nate Lopez of California AJ won 2 - 0       (This clinched AJ a 7th place finish)
