This was billed as the game of the week by two Group 3 powerhouses and boy did it deliver. Cranford featured a quarterback named Green who rountinely delivers 200+ yards rushing and very good passing. Summit relied heavily on AJ Iarussi and Mike Badgley because of the absence of Tyler Carbone and Kyre Negron. The latter two being out with injuries. As a result, Summit leaned heavily on the rush.
Summit stuffed Cranford on their first two posessions and the Summit fans thought maybe Cranford was over rated. On Summit's second posession they moved from the Summit 41 to score in 7 plays, all rushes. The drive was aided by 25 yards of penalties against Cranford. Iarussi, Austin Carbone and Badgley combined to move the ball to Cranford 18 and Badgley took it from there to score. Badgley's PAT gave Summit a 7-0 lead.
Cranford quickly showed that they weren't underated by driving 80 on 11 rushes and a pass that Summit couldn't stop. The PAT was missed and the half ended with Summit holding a slim 7-6 lead.
Summit profited when Cranford kicked two kickoffs OB and was forced to kick a third from the 30. Will Shamim caught the short kick and returned it 17 yards to the Summit 47. Runs by Iarussi, Badgley and Chris Zanelli put the ball on the Cranford 35. Iarussi ran through the entire Cranford team for 35 yards and a TD. The cheering was short lived because Cranford started their next possesion with 84 yard scamper by Green, to score. The 2-point conversion failed and Summit clung to a 14-12 advantage. Later in the quarter Cranford coughed up the ball on their own 41 . Charlie Terry come on for one play and tossed a beautiful 38 yard pass to Austin CarboneS to the 3, and Iarussi bulled it into the end zone to put Summit ahead 21-12.
Summit's next drive came late in 3rd quarter and started on the Summit 35. Runs by Iarussi and Badgley got to the cranford 43 and Iarussi, again, ripped through the Cranford defense for a 43 yard TD. So Summit entered the final quarter ahead 27-12. A seemingly comforatable margin. But it was not to be. After a Summit possession ended on the Cranford 16, Cranfod took possession an drove 84 yards to score on a 44 yard pass play. Cranford went for 2 and made it so , with 5:02 left in the game, Cranford had cut the lead to 7 points. Naturally, Cranford decided on a on-side kick. To Summit's horror, they were successful and had the ball back at the summit 42. Eight running plays later they scored, kicked the extra and tied the game 27-27. In the process they ran most of the off the clock.
For the second game in a row summit needed some last minute heorics and they got it. Masterfano ran the kick off back 45 yards to the 35. A penalty moved the ball to the 27. on third down and 20 seconds left, Badgley kicked a beautiful 42 yard Field Goal to win the game!
