Summit vs Delaware Valley 10/26/2012 | ||||||||||||||||||

The build up to this game was tremendous. Both teams had almost identical records against their 5 common opponents and there were lots of power points riding on the game. Delaware Valley planted their flag in the ground on their opening possession, they drove 63 yards in 5 running plays to take a 7-0 lead. DV unveiled a shift move that drew Summit offside twice at key points in the drive. They would use that shift over and over in the 1st half, successfully a total of six times. Summit's first two possessions gained good yardage but sputtered without scoring. On the third DV possession they moved 73 yards in 7 plays with their star runner, Sean Hogan, racing 33 yards for the score. The Summit fans were stunned as they now faced a powerful opponent that suddenly had a 14-0 advantage.
Summit's next possession began when Kyre Negron returned the kickoff 33 yards to the DV 47 yard line. Eight plays later AJ Iarussi blasted into the endzone to get Summit on the scoreboard. DV's next possession seemed to be headed toward another score when Colm Dougherty intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards to the Summit 36. Iarussi ran for 11 yards to the 47 and Mike Badgley connected with Negron who put on a spectacular example of open field running and raced 53 yards for a TD. Badgley's kick tied the game at 14 at halftime.
DV's 1st possession of the 2nd half appeared headed for the Summit goal line, but the defense stiffened and got the ball back on downs at the Summit 18. Runs by Negron and Badgley gave Summit a first down. A Run by Iarussi and a pass to Negron gave Summit a 1st down at the DV 39. Iarussi gained 20 yards to the 19 and Negron covered the last 19 yards for the go ahead score. That score seemed to take some of the starch out of DV. and they were forced to punt on their next possession. It was a good punt that went 57 yards into the endzone. Summit covered the 80 yards in 7 plays, keyed by a spectacular Negron reception of a Charlie Terry pass for 25 yards, a 29 yard run by Badgley and a 16 yard TD run by Negron. Finally, some breathing room with Summit ahead 28-14 as they entered the 4th quarter.
Summit stopped DV early in the 4th quarter and got the ball on Summit's 35. A 6 yard run by Negron and an 11 yard run by Andrew Masterfano moved the ball to the DV 48. Three runs and a Summit penalty gave Summit a 4th and 9 at the DV 47. Badgley went back to punt, but instead the ball was snapped to Iarussi who raced 35 yards to the DV 12. A holding penalty and a procedure penalty put Summit back on the 28. From there Badgley passed to Will Shamim, who made a great catch in heavy traffic, to score. DV showed their power by taking the kickoff and scoring on a 70 yard pass to narrow the score to 35-21 with 3:35 left. They were successful on the on-side kick but a pair of sacks ended the threat.
Colm Dougherty (15 tackles and an interception) and Austin Carbone (11 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss and 2 sacks) led the Summit defense
