| Both teams entered this highly anticipated game with identical 7-0 records and it was a battle royal right to the finish. Summit fell behind in the first quarter but rallied behind Ba'Shawn Micken's 12 point and Ryan Sweeney's 7 points to take a half time lead at 22-18. Unfortunately, Robby Walsh picked up 2 fouls in the 1st quarter and spent much of the half on the bench. Fouls shots would turn out to be a key factor in the game.
Dayton regained the advantage 32-30 in the 3rd quarter. In addition, Walsh picked up his 4th fouls and Mac Wiesner also was called for his 4th foul. This put a severe crimp in both the offense and defense. Summit played catch-up through out the final quarter but never regained the lead. With 1:10 left Dayton held 46-40 lead. Two Free throws by Sweeney and a basket by Micken's narowed the gap to 2 points. with 50 second left. An exchange of free throws put the score at 48-46 with 11 seconds on the clock and Dayton with the ball. Dayton was immediatley fouled and made only one of two fouls shots giving them a 3 point lead with 10 seconds left. Summit's 3 point try failed and the put back left Summit short by one point.
The foul pattern was very unusual. Both teams were called for 18 fouls, but Dayton went to the line 26 times to Summit's 15. In addition, Summit's fouls were concentrated in three players; Walsh with 4 fouls, Matt Fischetti with 4 fouls and Wiesner with 5 fouls. That severely restricted the playing time of 3 key players. Ultimately Dayton scored 18 points at the foul line to Summit's 11.
Micken's led Summit's scoring with 26 points and Sweeney was in double digits with 11 points. Fischetti came on strong on defense with 10 rebounds to help keep Summit in the game.
