Summit advanced to the 2nd round of the Union County Tournament with its victory over St. Mary. While the final margin of victory was comfortable, it wasn't easy until the final minutes. Summit Started off with three nice steals but in each case the layup or short jump shot failed. In fact, over the first quarter Summit sank only 4 of its 16 shots. The shooting improved in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. However, since St. Mary didn't have anyone to matchup with Robbie Walsh in the paint, they relied on the outside shot. They managed 7 treys during the first three quarters, staying within 5 points starting the 4th quarter.
A Basket by Walsh, 2 free throws by Mac Wiesner and three points by Ba'Shawn Mickens gave Summit the lead to 10 points. St. Mary came back to get within 6 points with 3 minutes still left in the game. A FG by Ryan Sweeney was answered by yet another St. Mary 3 pointer. That cut the lead to 5 with 2 minutes left. But that was the last points St. Mary would score. Summit was perfect from the foul line down the stretch to put the game away.
As has increasingly been the case, the Hilltopper scoring was well distrbuted. Mickens led the scoring with 19 points and Walsh (14 points), Wiesner (10 points) and Sweeney (9 points ) accounted for all but 2 of Summit's points. Walsh had another double-double with 16 rebounds.
Summit will play in the UCT 2nd round on Wednesday 2/13, probably against Union Catholic (5th Seed)
