Union Swimmer of the year:
Ryan Sebastion
Ryan Sebastian and his Summit teammates did something the team had not accomplished in 37 years -- win a state championship. Sebastian won two individual events for the Union County school in that meet, as he registered first-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (50.55) and 100 breaststroke (59.42). "It was just a great moment for all of us," he said. "We had hoped at the beginning of the season that we would be able to do it. Once we finally got there, we knew we needed to do everything right. Once everything played out, it was a great moment."
The junior had also helped Summit prevail the week before in one of the most thrilling meets of the season as the Union County school defeated Princeton, 87-83, in the Public B state semifinals. In that meet, Summit led, 81-75, with just the 400 freestyle relay remaining. A 1-3 finish for Princeton would have meant an 85-85 final score that would have resulted in power points within the meet as the tiebreaker. Princeton would have won that tiebreaker. But while the Mercer County school did finish first and third, Summit finished in a tie for first, as each team's top relay finished in 3:17.39. Instead of Princeton receiving eight points for first and two for third, the first and second-place points were split between Summit and Princeton at six each, and the Union County school got the victory. "(Summit) coach (Luke) Piede had told me that we needed a win or second and third," said Sebastian, who was not part of the final relay. "When we saw that it was going to be extremely close, we just hoped for the best and cheered on (teammate) Will Benn. When he tied, it was great."
Sebastian was key for Summit, No. 5 in the final Star-Ledger Top 20, in the semis as he recorded two first-place finishes. The 5-11 swimmer finished the 100 fly in 51.55 and won the 100 breast in 59.33. Summit finished the 2012-13 dual meet campaign with a 14-1 record, including two separate seven-meet win streaks. The team jumped out to a 7-0 start, including a victory over No. 20 Scotch Plains.Summit lost to No. 2 Westfield, 97-73, on Jan. 10, although Sebastian still made an impact. He finished the 100 fly in 52.20 and was also victorious in the 100 breast (1:00.14).
The Public B champions would not lose again, as victories over Oratory, Mendham, and No. 18 Hillsborough set Summit up for a run in the NJSIAA tournament. Summit defeated New Providence and Morristown to lock up the North Jersey, Section 2, Public B championship. "The season we had was spectacular," Sebastian said. "It's hard to describe in words. We thought about it and I never really thought of it actually happening. Once it finally picked up and we got in the semifinals, once we realized we had a shot at winning the whole thing, it just made me happy that we did it. This was the one year that we had the best shot of doing it."
Sebastian not only helped his team during the most important meets of the season, but he also had an impressive individual season.
The junior collected four first-place finishes at the Union County Championships, helping Summit to a second-place team finish, 35 points behind Westfield (450-415). Sebastian was victorious in the 100 fly, setting a meet record with a time of 51.08. He also won the 100 breast (59.18), and was the anchor on the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.22) and participated on the victorious Summit 200 medley relay (1:37.21, good for a meet record). "I thought that my performance was pretty good," Sebastian said of the Union County meet. "I won the 100 breast and 100 butterfly, and both relays I was on took first. But we really wanted to beat Westfield. We knew it would be a close meet."
At the NJSIAA Meet of Champions final on March 3, Sebastian recorded two top-five finishes. He collected a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (1:52.43) and was fifth in the 100 fly (50.84). The former time is good for All-America consideration.
