Friday, Dec 28  8:00AM  Away Rahway  Summit was fifth place in the 9-team Rahway Tournament, with seniors Nick Abbott (132 lbs) and AJ Iarussi (195 lbs) winning championships, senior Diego Barquero (145 lbs) a 2nd place medal, junior Colm Dougherty (160 lbs) third place and junior Nick Testa (126 lbs) fourth place.  Iarussi's three bouts were no contest, each ending in a first period pin in a combined total of only one minute and forty one seconds, which earned him Outstanding Wrestler honors for the upper weight classes.  Abbott won his third straight Rahway title, scoring first period pins over Brian Mooney of AL Johnson in the semifinals and over Chris Ferreira of New York's Xavier HS in the championship final.

Summit was invited for the first time to participate in the Paul Finn Duals team tournament at Millburn which honors Millburn's 1976 state heavyweight champion. Summit's final match of the day against Millburn, which will be televised on HomeTowne TV channel 36 later this week, was a close defeat. Seniors AJ Iarussi and Nick Abbott both posted three wins for the day, with Abbott's victory at 138 lbs over Millburn's Dylan Pollock to avenge a District tournament loss last season providing the biggest excitement for Summit fans. Roselle Park was the team champion of the event."

Saturday, Jan 19 TBD  Away UCT @Union Summit senior AJ Iarussi made the most of an otherwise dissapointing day for the Hilltoppers by winning the Union County championship at 220 pounds.  Iarussi pinned all three of his opponents on the way to the title, including Cranford's Jeff Weiss in 4:24 in the finals. Summit had two fifth place finishers in Nick Testa at 126 pounds and Nick Abbott at 132 pounds but finished 14th as a team well behind team champions Roselle Park.
Sunday, Jan 20 Away UCT JV Tournament Summit was the 6th place team in the JV Union County tournament, powered by a championship performance by freshman Robbie Faris at 132 pounds.  Faris was seeded 3rd but won 3 matches to take the title, winning the championship final 8-4 over top seeded Zack Palmer from AL Johnson.  Summit also had two second place finishers in Eric Losada at 138 pounds and Will Howard at 182 pounds.
Wednesday, Jan 23  TBD  Away Gov. Livingston  Lost 51-24 The team result was doomed by 5 Summit forfeits, but the Hilltoppers won half of the matches that did take place, getting pins from AJ Iarussi and Colm Dougherty.  The featured match of the meet was at 132 pounds where Summit's Nick Abbott took on Ryan Hoy (winner last week of the Union County championship and the Outstanding Wrestler award in that tournament), and Abbott did not disappoint, scoring a 10-5 victory.

Summit had some good individual results despite three team losses at a quad meet hosted by Scotch Plains.  Seniors Nick Abbott and AJ Iarussi and juniors Nick Testa and Colm Dougherty each won all three of their bouts.  In the featured matchup against Scotch Plains,  Abbott defeated Brian Lapham 4-2 to avenge a loss at the UCT.  In the Union match, undefeated Iarussi had his toughest match of the season, winning a nail-biter 4-3 over Kristian Lewis. Against Linden, Testa scored a late 5-point move to win 9-8 over Nick Tekula. Dougherty had two pins and an overtime win to sweep the 160 pound bouts.

Saturday, Feb 23 TBD  Away NJSIAA Districts @ Millburn
Summit was fifth place team (out of 10 teams) in the District X tournament held at Millburn High School, with two individual champions (Nick Abbott at 132 lbs and AJ Iarussi at 220 lbs) and three other placewinners (Colm Dougherty 3rd place at 160 lbs, Nick Testa 4th place at 126 lbs and Harold Esquivel 4th place at 182 lbs).

On his way to the final, Abbott pinned Columbia's Andrew Hernandez-Ford and defeated Roselle Park's Bobby Vail 6-4 in the semi-final. In the championship finals, Abbott scored a late third period takedown to win 4-3 over Seton Hall Prep's Anthony Canfora, securing his 100th career varsity win and earning him recognition as the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.  

Iarussi continued his undefeated season (now 39-0) in dominent fashion, receiving a first round bye, pinning Barringer's Victor Rivera in the semi-finals and winning the championship finals by pinning Roselle Park's Vincent Picarelli in only 13 seconds.

Dougherty was seeded 3rd and lived up to that billing by pinning Barringer's Chris Bueno in 38 seconds in the quarter-final and then recovering from a semi-final loss to win the 3rd place consolation match with an exciting 6-5 decision over Union's Brandon Paris.  

Esquivel, a first year wrestler in his junior year, pulled the upset of the tournament at 182 lbs by defeating the #2 seed Steven Montauro from host school Millburn by a 7-2 score, earning him a slot in the semi-finals and an eventual 4th place finish. Testa's junior season came to a close with a 4th place finish at 126 lbs and an outstanding season record of 30-11 when he won the quarter-final 13-2 over Union's Dimitry Saint-Jean but then lost two high scoring matches to eventual champion Nick Polimeni from Seton Hall in the semi-final and then to Barrenger's Nelson Mendez in the consolation match. Summit senior Dan Kennedy almost scored the biggest upset of the tournament at 152 lbs, winning his preliminary round match over Chatham's Brian Weber in overtime by a 7-5 score and then losing an exciting but ultimately hearbreaking match in triple overtime against the #1 seed Khashari Wilson of Columbia.

Abbott, Iarussi and Dougherty advance to the Region 3 tournament in Union (where the top 3 placewinners will qualify for the state championship tournament in Atlantic City), with the preliminary round action on Wednesday evening (when Dougherty will first compete) followed by the quarterfinals on Friday evening (the first matches for Abbott and Iarussi) and the completion of the tournament on Saturday.

AJ Iarussi won the Region 3: 220 Lbs title and will move on to the State Championships next weekend in Atlantic City. This was his 43rd consecutive win, but it was not without some tension. Iarussi had to settle for a takedown 21 seconds into overtime.
Fri, Sat, Sun, March 8,9,10 Awayt NJSIAA Finals AJ Iarussi won his first match but lost his quarterfinal match in overtime. In the Wrestleback he had a bye into the 2nd round. AJ won his 2nd and 3rd round matches and and lost on Sunday to finish in 6th place.
