The Summit Baseball team sure pick the right time to play its best baseball of the season. First Summit blanked favored South Plainfield in the 1st round of the Sectional and then beat Mendham in this quarter final game. That earned the Hilltoppers the right to take on the #1 seed, Cranford on Tuesday May 27th. In both games Summit played good solid baseball.

John Floegel took the mound for Summit and went the distance. Along the way he only allowed 2 runs and issued only one walk, while striking out seven Minutemen.

The first 4 innings were scoreless. Summit grabbed a 2 run lead in the top of the 5th inning. Alec Fuoti was hit by the pitcher and, after one out, Kyle Brown drew a walk. Sean Guidia, who went 3 for 4 for the day, singled to load the bases. Cam Fuoti singled to drive in the two runs.

Mendham rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the 6th on 3 singles and 2 sacrifice flies. In the Summit 7th Brown again was issued a walk. Another single by Guida moved Brown into scoring position. A single by Cam Fuoti drove in the run to put Summit ahead 3-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning.

Floegel started the inning having thrown 85 pitches. The Mendham leadoff hitter singled and was advanced to 2nd by a sacrifice bunt. A fly to left was tracked down by Hunter Miller. At this point, Floegel issued his only walk of the game. Was he running out of gas? Only one more out was needed to win. The count went to 3-2, then the batter fouled off the next pitch. The tension was building. On the next pitch the battered rifled a shot between the first and second basemen. David Berardi made the defensive play of the game, going deep onto the outfield grass to stop the ball. He whirled and threw off balance to Guida for the final out and a trip the Sectional Semifinals for the #13 seeded Summit Hilltoppers.
