The Hilltoppers closed out their regular season with an exciting 5-4 victory over New Providence. The game was a night game played on Summit’s field at the High School. It drew a big crowd of both Summit and NP fans. It offered the fans the treat of a well played extra inning baseball game. Andrew Aguilera was the starting pitcher and pitched the first 5 innings He turned the ball over to Charlie Pacillio with the score tied 3-3. Pacillio held the Pioneers to 1 run over the final 3 innings and was credited with the win.

Over the last few games the middle infield combination of Cam Fuoti and David Berardi have really jelled. They started a key double play in the victory over South Plainfield and three crucial double plays tonight and just missed a fourth by a step. Needless to say the three DPs were key in snuffing out incipient NP rallies.

Summit took a one run lead in the bottom of the 1st when Tanner Fulton walked and Cam Fuoti tripled to drive him in. NP tied the score in the top of the 3rd and took a 3-1 lead in top of the 5th. Summit produced two runs in the their half of the 5th when Fulton was again walked and Sean Guida tripled and then scored on wild pitch.

Summit regained the lead in 6th. John Floegel walked to start the inning. After one out, Aguilera singled to put runners at 1st and third. With an open base, Aguilera went to steal 2nd, The catcher took the bait and threw done to 2nd, allowing Floegel to steal home and give Summit a 4-3 lead entering the 7th inning. New Providence tied the score with a walk, a pickoff error and a single, to force extra innings.

In the 8th NP threatened with a lead off walk followed by a single. After a popup out, Summit pulled off it’s third double play to stop the threat. In the Summit half of the 8th Aguilera drew a walk after one out. He moved to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored the wining run when Alec Fuoti singled to right. A great finish to the regular season.
