Summit, the 13 seed, travelled to South Plainfield. To take on the 4th seeded team. If you weren’t there, you missed the finest “Baseball” game of the Season. Heavily favored South Plainfield game up with a couple of crucial plays to squelch Summit rallies but Sean Guida pitched the greastest game of his career to secure a 2-0 triumph. The victory advanced Summit to the Sectional Quarter Finals against Mendham on Thursday May 22.

Guida began the game by issuing walks to the first two batters he faced, and the fans crossed their fingers. But Guida was brilliant for there on. After those two walks, he faced only 19 batters to get the next 18 outs.

Summit scored 1 run in the first. Kyle Brown led off the game with a beautiful bunt single, stole second and took 3rd on a ground out. He scored on an RBI single by Cam Fuoti. South Plainfield snuffed out a rally in the 2nd inning with a dead perfect throw from the Center fielder to 3rd base to catch a Hilltopper trying to take 3rd on a single Alex Fuoti.

Summit got another rally going in the 4th inning. David Berardi started the inning with a single. A good bunt by Andrew Aguilera put Berardi in scoring position. An error by the short stop on a ground ball by A. Fuoti allowed Berardi to take 3rd. Berardi scored on a fielders choice that left Hunter Miller on first. Miller stole second and appeared to score on a Single by Brown. However, instead of throwing home to get Miller, the S Plainfield right fielder threw to the 1st baseman who tagged Brown out while he was off base and before Miller could reach home plate.

So the game mover to the dramatic bottom of the 7th inning as Guida took the mound. South Plainfield ’s first batter beat out a ground ball in a somewhat controversial call. The next batter was walked, two on no outs. After a ground out, The next batter was walked to load the bases with the winning run. At this point Guida’s pitch count was over 100 and John Floegel was sent in to relive Guida. Floegel struck out the next batter. The bases were still loaded with two out. The count went to 3-2 on the next batter and the tension was building. On the next pitch the batter stroked a big fly ball deep and near the left field foul line. The game was hanging in the balance. The S. Plaunfield runners tearing around the bases. If Miller can’t get to it, 3 runs and GAME OVER. However, Miller made a great catch to end the game and the leave Summit fans cheering. .
