Cranford was not the same team that Summit beat in the second game of the season. What’s more they were coming off a convincing trouncing of 3rd seeded Palisades Park in the 1st round of the sectional. The first quarter announced that this was going to be a struggle as each team scored convincing touchdowns in their first two possessions. It was looking like this might be a “whoever has possession last, wins” kind of game. However, Summit managed to keep Cranford from scoring in the 2nd quarter and scored late in the 2nd quarter to go to the locker room ahead 20-14. But Summit would have to kick off to Cranford to start the 2nd half.

However, Cranford gave Summit unbelievably good field position when they tried a fake punt on 4th down at their 41 and Summit stopped them 6" short at the Cranford 42 yard line. Summit made them pay. After Charlie Terry gained to the 38, Colm Dougherty covered the last 38 yards in 3 plays and Terry hit Andrew Masterfano for a 2 point conversion. It looked like Summit had delivered a knockout blow. However, Cranford didn’t see it that way. The Cougars proceeded to march from their 29 to a first down at the Summit 17 yardline. With 4th and 5 at the Summit 12 the Summit pass rush forced an incomplete pass. Failure to score and make it a one touchdown game seemed to take the starch out of Cranford, and they would not threaten again.

Summit would go on to score one more time to make the game look more lopsided than it really was.

Cranford surprisingly tried an onside kick to start the game. That gave Summit possession on their 46 yardline. A 25 yard pass from Terry to Chris Zanelli and some hard running by Dougherty and Terry ended with Terry scoring from the 5. James Johnson kicked the extra point. After Cranford went 70 yards in 8 plays to score, Summit started another drive at 35 yard line. The 65 yard drive featured a pair of passes to David Connolly that covered 50 yards

Summit’s third TD again started at Summit’s 35 with a 5 yard pass to Materfano and almost ended with 13 yd pass to Zanelli but he was stopped on the 2. The rest of the yardage was the running of Dougherty and Terry, with Dougherty scoring from 2 yards out.

Summit’s final drive was unusual in the it featured 70 yards of penalties, 25 yards against Summit and 45 yards against Cranford. At one point a Cranford player was ejected from the game. In between the penalties it was all the running of Dougherty and Terry.

Summit will meet old Iron Hills Conference foe, Parsippany Hills. The Vikings defeated the top seeded West Essex last night in an impressive display of passing.
