Johnson 0 7 8 8 23

Note: my records of the scoring differed significantly from what was reported to the Star-Ledger by Johnson High School.

Through the first 20 minutes of this game there was no hint that it would be the blowout that it eventually became. Johnson’s opening possession showed that they were quite capable of moving the ball on the ground before it stalled in Summit territory, helped by a penalty. Summit took possession on their 11 yard line, but two consecutive passes from Charlie Terry to Andrew Masterfano moved the ball to midfield.. A 20 yard run by Colm Dougherty and a 21 yard Terry pass to Chris Zanelli put the ball on the Johnson 4. Dougherty carried it into the end zone and Zanelli kicked the first of his 5 extra points.

Following an interception late in the 1st quarter Johnson had possession at the Summit 43. Eight running plays later Johnson was in the end zone and the score was tied.. Summit responded quickly after Johnson’s on-side kick failed. A 48 yard Terry pass to Sean Andrews put the ball on the Johnson 3 yardline. Two plays later Dougherty bulled his way into the end zone. Zanelli’s PAT made it a 14-7 game. And so it stood until late in the half. Then lightning struck for Summit.

Over the space of the final 2 minute and 33 seconds Summit exploded for three TDs. With Caleb Sink operating at quarterback Summit moved from its 20 to score. The drive was quick and featured an 18 yard run by Sink, a 14 yard pass to Zanelli and a 20 yard pass to Masterfano. Both passes were heavily defended and both required amazing catches. Dougherty covered the final 3 yards. After the kickoff Johnson turned the ball over via a fumble on their 26 yard line. One play later Dougherty was in the end zone. Summit again kicked off and Johnson moved the ball into Summit territory. However, Dougherty intercepted a pass at mid-field and returned the ball 50 yards for the touchdown. Twenty one points in 2 minutes 33 seconds. The half ended with Summit on top 35-7.and the game was essentially decided,

Summit scored again very late in the 3rd quarter on a 62 yard pass play from Terry to Masterfano who ended the game with 5 receptions covering 125 yards. Summit would score again mid-way through the 4th quarter when Drew Mulholland intercepted a pass and returned it to the Johnson 27. One play later David Connolly showed he has some real speed as he raced 27 yards to score.
