Summit took advantage of a bad snap on North Plainfield’s first punt attempt and was able to start their first possession at North Plainfield’s 32 yard line. Three runs by Colm Dougherty and Summit scored. Chris Zanelli kicked the extra point. It was the first of his five PATs. North Plainfield responded with a surprising 13 play TD drive that covered 67 yards. They went for two and failed. Their response sent a chill through the Summit fans. How would Summit react? Well, the Hilltoppers took the kickoff and Andrew Masterfano returned it to the Summit 42. It took only three running plays (Zanelli for 21, Dougherty for 26 and 12 yards) to move the ball to the end zone. Summit would score twice more before the end of the half, both on passes from Charlie Terry to Zanelli. The first of the two was setup by runs by Caleb Sink and Dougherty and a nice pass to Sean Andrews. The second drive started when the defense stopped North Plainfield on the Summit 13 with less that 2 minutes left in the half. A pass to Andrew Helmer gained 53 yards to the North Plainfield 35. Another Terry pass to Helmer and Summit was on the North Plainfield 15. A third pass to Zanelli put Summit on top 28-6 Summit took the opening kick off of the 2nd half and Zanelli returned it to the 50 yard line. Four running plays later Caleb Sink was in the end zone. A key play was a 41 yard run be Sink. That put the score at 35 - 6. North Plainfield would manage a score as the game clock ran out. |
