In spite of continuous rain, Summit scored on three of its first four possessions, taking a 16-0 lead. It looked like Summit was on the way to an easy victory. However, in the final seconds of the half Parsippany Hills connected on a 53 yard pass play to make the score 16-6 at halftime. That got Par Hills back in the game. Particularly knowing that they would receive the kickoff to begin the 2nd half. Lightning struck again on the 2nd play of the 2nd half. Par Hills scored on a 73 yard pass play. Two Par Hills TDs in the space of less than 2 minutes was a shock.

Now it was a 3 point game and the rain was pouring down. Summit mounted a long drive that stalled at the Par Hills 30 yard line. Fortunately the Summit defense stuffed Par hills on their next three possessions. Late in the 4th quarter Par Hills got possession on Summit’s 48. A running play gave them a first down at the Summit 23. Three plays later it was 4th and less than one at the Summit 14. That setup the first of two great defensive plays that would seal the victory. Summit’s line rose up and stopped Par Hills just inches short of a first down.

Summit was unable to move the ball and was forced to punt. The wind, rain and a bad bounce of the ball allowed Par Hills to take possession at Summit’s 30 yard line. The Par Hills QB ran 12 yards on a 4th down play to gain a 1st down on Summit’s 14. Two running plays made it 3rd and 5 at the 9 and bit over 2 minutes left in the game. The defense rose to the occasion with a monster sack by Mac Wiesner at the 16, putting Par Hills outside of Field Goal range. Obviously this setup a passing situation but Andrew Masterfano stepped in front of the receiver in the end zone and intercepted pass, running it out of the end zone to the 38 yard line. It was Masterfano’s second interception of the game (and season high 7th). At this point there was only 1:40 left on the clock, Par Hills was out of time out and the Summit could just run out the clock.

Summit’s first TD came on a 9 play 74 yard drive, Colm Dougherty had two big plays in the drive with 36 yard run and a 23 yard screen pass for the TD. Summit’s next TD came on their 3rd possession that started on the Summit 13. Key plays were a 33 yd Charlie Terry pass to Dan Childers, a 19 yard run by Terry and a 28 yard TD pass from Terry to Chris Zanelli. Summit final score was 27 yard Field Goal by Freshman Jack Johnson. The key plays setting up the FG were a 22 yard reception by Masterfano and 20 yard run by Dougherty.

There was an interesting anomaly in this game that no one had ever seen before. Summit was called for nine penalties totaling 75 yards (all but one in the 1st half) while Par Hills suffered zero penalties in the entire game.
