|
Summit opened the season with a fairly easy victory that was marred by some sloppy play that included 4 Hilltopper fumbles and 17 penalties for 125 yards. Somerville recorded 5 fumbles and 8 penalties. The 25 penalties (totaling 220 yards) has to be some kind of a record. It certainly made a mess of the rhythm of the game.
Somerville’s first drive stalled at the Summit 46 when they were stopped on a 4th and 1 effort. Summit’s first possession started with a fumble and two penalties in the first four plays. Another Summit penalty and a 15 yard Somerville penalty punctuated the 9 play drive that saw Terry score on a six yard run. Zanelli added the extra point
Summit scored on its next possession that began when Mulholland took a Somerville punt and returned it 40 yards to the 18 yard line. Five plays, and 2 more penalties, later Dougherty scored from the 1 yard line. The big play of the drive was an 11 yard pass from Terry to Masterfano. Zanelli again added the PAT. Summit rounded out the 1st quarter scoring when a bad Somerville snap on a punt attempt went out of the end zone. Just before the end of the half Summit scored again on a 38 yard pass from Terry to Zanelli. The three play drive featured a 12 yard run by Dougherty.
Summit took the opening second half kickoff and quickly scored with long runs by Terry (13 yards) and Dougherty (53 yards). Masterfano covered the final 15 yards. Zanelli kicked the extra point.
Somerville would finally score late in the 4th quarter. The game ended with Colin Andrews intercepting a Somerville pass.
