Summit traveled to Bernardville to take on 12-3 Bernards High. Both teams were looking ahead to an important game in their county tournaments. Alex Crane was the Starter for Summit and he was very effective over the first 3 innnings, allowing only one hit and no runs. During those innings Summit took a 2-0 lead. In the first Kyle Brown led off with a single but was erased on a fielder’s choice by Matt Murdock. Murdock stole 2nd and scored on a Cam Fuoti single. In the 2nd inning Crane was walked after one out, stole second and scored on Robby Faris’s RBI single.
Things changed dramatically in the 4th as Bernards loaded the bases on a hit batter, a single and a walk. Another hit batter forced in a run and left the bases loaded. Will Schaffer took over and got the next batter to pop-up, followed by a 6-3 out to end the inning. Schaffer got in some trouble of his own in the 5th. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Another walk forced in a run to tie things up at 2-2. Summit regained the lead in the top of the 6th. Charlie Pacilio singled and Schaffer doubled to make the score 3-2.
However the bottom of the 6th began with a pair of walks. That brought on Jason Schneider in relief. The first batter he faced was safe on an error that allowed one run to score. That was followed by a single that drove in the final two runs of the game. Summit would threaten in the top of the 7th. Faris was walked and after one out Murdock was safe on an error, but a double play ended the game.
