Summit hadn’t been to a Union County semifinal in many years. For one brief half inning, at the top of the 2nd, the Hilltoppers led Cranford 2-1. Cranford didn’t waste any time getting back on top. They added 2 runs in their half of the 2nd and two more in the 3rd. Summit had a chance to gain some back in the fifth when back to back singles by the Fuoti brothers put runners on ar 1st and 2nd with one out. Sadly, two strikeouts ended the threat.
The game came apart in the bottom of the 5th. Cam Fuoti gave up a two doubles , a single and a walk to start the inning. Brian Cantillo came on in relief and gave up 3 singles. In addition, two infielders bumped into each other on a popup. The result was seven runs and a “mercy” ending at 12-2.
