This was a real baseball game for a change. Summit (10th seed) had traveled to Springfield to play Dayton (7th seed) in the first round of the Union County Tournament. Alec Fuoti was Summit’s starting pitcher. He didn’t allow a hit through 5 innings and the score stood at 4-0 going into the 6th. Summit added two more in the 6th to give the Hilltoppers a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th. A dropped 3rd strike and two singles loaded the basses for Dayton. A walk forced in Dayton’s first run of the game and left the bases loaded with no outs. Summit turned a great 1-2-3 double play that kept a runner from scoring. However, a double scored the two runners on base. An infield out ended the inning, but the score narrowed to 6-3. Summit’s 7th was scoreless so the Hilltopers carried a 3 run lead into the last of the 7th.

Alec Fuoti‘s pitch count had reached 99 at the end of the 6th inning and it was decided to have his brother Cam Fuoti close the game. C. Fuoti quickly got the #9 hitter to ground out. Two outs to go. The next batter walked and an infield error on a routine ground ball loaded the bases. With the tying runs on, C. Fuoti struck out the next batter. Now only one out stood between Summit and an upset of Dayton. Howevr, a two out single drove in drove in two unearned runs. Suddenly Dayton is within one run of sending the game into extra innings. Happily, C Fuoti rose to the occassion and struck out the final batter.

Summit’s 3 runs in the first inning came when Kyle Brown was save on a error. A single by Matt Murdock and a double by C. Fuoti produced one run. Murdock would score on an error. A walk to to Charlie Pacilio and a single by Hunter Miller scored the 3rd run.

Summit made it 4-0 when Brown walked, stole 2nd and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Summit added two more runs in the 6th on a one out single by Robby Faris. Brown was safe on an error and a single by Murdock drove in 2 two runs to give Summit a 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th.

Summit wil play Scotch Plains in a quarterfinal game at Scotch Plains. on Wednesday April 29th
