Summit 7 7 0 0 14
Cranford 10 9 14 0 33
It has been 5 years since the Summit fans have experienced a regular season loss and more than a decade since Cranford had tasted victory over a Hilltopper Squad. This loss was a hard pill to swallow.

Cranford gave notice on their first possession. On the third play Cranford’s Luke Christiano gathered in a pass and raced 52 yards for an easy touchdown. For the remainder of the game Christiano’s speed would prove to be a major thorn in Summit’s side.

Summit bounced back from the shock and mounted a 12 play drive to even the score. Chris Zanelli returned the kickoff 26 yard to stake Summit to a good field position at Summit 44. The drive culminated in a 15yard pass from Jake Froschauer to the always realiable Andrew Helmer. Paulo Umana’s PAT kick tied the score. Two Cranford penalties at crucial points helped keep the drive alive. On Cranford’s next possession they overcame two more Cougar penalties but stalled on the Summit 10. From there, Cranford’s Norton kicked a 22 yard field goal to give them a 10-7 lead starting the 2nd quarter

Another Cranford field goal midway into the 2nd quarter made the score 13-7. Zanelli gave Summit great field position by returning the kick off 51 yards to Cranford’s 39 yard line. Zanelli gained three and Helmer reeled in a pass for a 33 yard gain and a first down at the Cranford 3 yard line. After a Cranford penalty, Zanelli took it in for a score to make it 14-13 in favor of Summit. As it turned out this would be the last time Summit would hold the lead. Cranford took the kickoff and appeared headed for a score when a fumble gave the ball back to Summit with a few minutes still on the clock. On the 3rd play following the recovery a Summit pass was intercepted at mid field and returned the Summit 15. Three play later Cranford scored to go to the locker room with a 19-14 lead.

Cranford scored on 58 yard pass to Christiano on its first possession of the 2nd half. Their 2nd possession started after an interception and a return to Summit’s 30 yard. Five running plays later they scored. The score was 33-14 and the game was essentially over.

Note: Over the course of the game there were 18 penalties called for a total of 190 yards. 13 of the penalties came in the first half. At times it seemed that every time there was a big play, by either side, there was also a penalty. It really made a mess of the flow of the game.
