Summit’s offensive engine sputtered at the start. Its first three possessions netted only one first down and 3 punts. However, the 4th possession started on the Summit 49 and five plays later, on the final play of the quarter, Summit scored. Chris Zanelli ran for 7 yard on the first play and and 11 and 8 yards on the final two. In between, passes from Jake Froschauer to Matt Newman (10 yards) and Andrew Helmer (16 yards) moved the ball to the GL 19 yardline. Paulo Umana kicked the first of his four extra points.

Summit’s sixth possession started on Summit’s 31. On the first play Zanelli ripped off a 52 yard run to the GL 17 yard line. Three carries by Peter McKinley gave Summit a first down at the 6. A McKinley pass to Sean Andrews gave Summit a 14-0 lead.

While the offense struggled to find its rhythm, the defense really stiffled GL’s running game. GL managed to gain only 16 rushing yards in the first half on 16 attempts. Even though GL’s passing game was bit better the Highlanders never really threatened in the first half.

Summit kicked off to start the second half and GL decided to go with a passing game. The big play was a fake punt on 4th and 5 on the GL 48. It caught Summit completely off guard and gave GL a 1st down at the Summit 26. Two more passes and they were in the end zone for what would be their only score of the game. At the time it caused a lot of concern among the Summit fans.

Midway through the 3rd quarter Drew Mulholland made a fair catch of a towering GL punt at mid-field. On the next play McKinley raced 50 yards for a touchdown. That calmed the Summit fan’s nerves. On Summit’s next possession the drive stalled at the GL 18 and Umana kicked a beautiful 35 yard field goal to make it a 24-7 game. Summit would score once more in the final quarter. Summit took possession at the GL 41, after a 4th down sack of GL’s quarterback. Froschauer ran for 12 and 10 yards and Zanelli covered the final 19 yards.

Notes: Froschauer was forced to punt 5 times and averaged an exceptional 40.1 yards per punt. At the other end of the punting game, GL’s punter had amazing hang time so that Drew Mulholland was forced to repeated call for a fair catch in heavy GL traffic. He handled them all beautifully, saving many yards for Summit.
