Summit took on Morris Hills in the first round of the Sectional Tournament and had to dig deep for the victory. Morris Hills gave notice that they were going to be tough on to opening drive. They took the opening kickoff and moved quickly to a first down at the Summit 20 yard line. Summit didn’t seem to have an answer to Morris Hills’ Isaiah Turner. However, for some reason they turned to the pass and on 4th down Andrew Helmer intercepted and returned the ball to the Summit 33. Summit moved to score in 8 plays helped by the running of Chris Zanelli and Peter McKinlay passes to Helmer (12 yards), Sean Andrews (16 yards) and a 30 yd TD pass to Drew Mulholland. Zanelli scored the 2-point PAT.

The Summit fans were beginning to feel pretty good at this point. However, Morris Hills dominated play over the remaing 18 minutes of the half. A Morris Hills drive stalled on the Summit 6 and Knights settled for a field goal, Then two possessions later they took advantage of a short Summit punt and scored and Summit went to the lockers down 11-8. To add to misery, Peter McKinlay was injured and out of the game. That meant that all three quarterbacks (Richson, Froschauer and McKinlay) were now out of action.

Well, Chris Zanelli really stepped forward to shoulder the burden. He ran the 2nd half kickoff to 45 yards to the Morris Hills 45 and then carried the ball 5 straight times, ending in the end zone. In fact of the 25 Summit plays in the half, all but 6 were carries by Zanelli.

Morris Hills didn’t go quietly as they scored again to retake the lead at 17 -15. On the next possession the running of Zanelli ( with help from Spencer Sink) put Summit on the MH 29 yardline. Summit caught Morris Hills flat footed on 3rd and long. Zanelli pitched out to Helmer but instead of running Helmer threw to a wide open Vincent Bonomo in the endzone with no defenders within 20 yards. Zanelli put the game away on the next Summit possession carrying most of the load in 67 yard drive.

Summit will take on Parsippany Hills next Saturday at home in a Sectional semifinal .
