Summit 9 7 7 7 30
Rahway 7 7 0 6 20

Rahway came to Summit having only one win in its first six games and many of the Summit fans were anticipating an easy victory. It was anything but easy. With the passing game sputtering in the first half, Summit turned almost exclusively to the running of Chris Zanelli. Of the 30 plays Summit ran in the 2nd half 80 % (24 of 30) were Zanelli runs. Happily, Zanelli delivered the goods, gaining 211 yards in 37 carries plus another 6 yards on a pass reception.

Rahway’s first possession ended with a a bad snap from the center that resulted in a Safety for Summit. Those 2 points would loom large through the game. Summit took the ball at the Rahway 48 following the kick off from the Rahway 20 yard line. Peter McKinlay moved it to the 31 and two runs by Zanelli took it to the endzone. Paulo Umana’s PAT made the score 9-0. The Summit fans were feeling good. However, Rahway quickly answered with a 65 yard drive to make it a 9-7 game. Late in the 2nd quarter, Summit scored on an 81 yard drive that culminated with Zanelli scoring from the one. Putting Summit on top 16-7. Again Rahway took the kickoff and went 73 yards in six plays, aided by a 53 yard run, to close the gap to 16-14, the difference being that opening safety. After trading interceptions the half ended.

Late in the 3rd quarter those 2 points remained the slim margin. Summit took over at the Summit 31 following a Rahway punt. Eight plays later Summit was on the Rahway 2 with a first down.. The Rahway defense stiffened and it took four nerve racking runs to punch it in for the score. At last some breathing room at 23 - 14. But not for long. Rahway took the kickoff and eventually scored on a 24 yard run that made it look easy for Rahway. Summit blocked the extra point and the lead was back to a safety and a missed extra point. Late in the game McKinlay intercepted a Rahway pass and returned 15 yards to make a 30-20 game and put the game away
