Summit successfully opened its 2014-15 season under our new coach, Dan Healy, with a 67-55 win over the always difficult Hillside Comets. The first half looked like it might be easy as Summit had a hot hand and raced to a 27-12 halftime lead. However, 22 of the 27 points came from just two players, Jordan Gonzales with 10 points (all in the 1st quarter) and Dan Montgomery with 12 points (all three pointers).
As is typical with Hillside, they really turned up the defensive heat and closed the gap to 6 points in a hurry. Fortunately, Wayne Wong and Will Schafer each scored 5 point late in the 3rd quarter to get the lead back to 12 points. Hillside wasn’t done and with 2:30 left in the game the score stood 57-50. As Summit paraded to the foul line and hit 12 of 17 free throws. Gonzales, in addition to 4 of free throws, knocked down 4 field goals and a 3-point play to end up with a game high 25 points.
Defensively, Gonzales led with 7 rebounds.
