Summit played New Providence in the 1st round of the Union County Tournament at New Providence. As in their 1st meeting, 3 pointer played a major roll. The NP shooters were unbelievable in the 1st quarter. They drained seven threes in a row before finally missing. Those 21 points allowed the Pioneers to establish a 28-13 lead. They scored two more 3's in the 2nd quarter, but the Summit offense began to move and closed the lead from 15 to 10.
The 2nd half started strong for Summit who rallied to make it a 4 point game, before a spurt put NP ahead again by 13 points. Summit again rallied in the 4th and cut the lead from 13 to 5. However, difficulty hitting free throws allowed New Providence to regain the upper hand.
For the game Summit hit only 7 of 21 free throws in contrast to New Providence who scored on 19 of 29 attempts, enough to make the difference.
Will Schaffer and Paul Flanagan were Summit’s high scorers with 15 points, Wayne Wong had 12.
