Summit and New Providence met for the 3rd time this season. The importance of the rivalry was attested by the fact that the gym was packed for the first time this year. The first quarter gave hope that, after two loses, this might be Summit’s night. Led by Jordan Gonzalez’s 11 points, 3 pointers by Paul Flanagan and Xavier McCormick and a FG by Will Schaffer, Summit raced to a 19-6 lead. However, the tables were turned in the 2nd quarter as Summit was held to 6 points, all on free throws. By the end of the quarter the lead had been cut to 3 points.
The Pioneers really took over in the 2nd half, out scoring Summit 44 to 32, to dominate the the Hilltoppers. It didn’t help the Summit went cold from the foul line hitting only 5 of 15 chances, while New Providence scored on 13 of 17. Ultimately, that difference was the margin of Summit’s loss.
Gonzalez had 16 points and Schaffer 11. Patrick Maloney pulled down 10 rebounds.
