If you were at the 1st Rahway game you might have a hard time believing Summit’s victory. At Rahway they overwhelmed Summit and raced to a 48-18 lead at the half. Obviously Summit had done some work going into this meeting. Of course, it helped that Jordon Gonvales had an amazing game. Summit held Rahway to only 8 1st quarter points to Summit’s 19, but Gonzales scored every one of those 19 points. The 2nd quarter saw the lead cut to 9 points and Gonzales add 5 more points to his total. Summit was ahead 31-22 coming out for the 2nd half.
Summit and Rahway played even through the 3rd quarter as Gonzales notched 9 more points and Summit's lead was 10 points. The Hilltoppers had a great start to the 4th quarter with scoring by Gonzales, Michael Kaelin, Xavier McCormick and Paul Flanagan. So with about 5 minutes left in the game Summit held a 16 point lead and things were looking very good. However, Rahway wasn’t done. They turned up the pressure in the next 2 minutes, scoring 14 points unanswered points to close to within 2 points and Summit back on its heels. It looked like collapse was imminent.
But baskets by Patrick Maloney and Gonzales, countered, by a Rahway field Goal, left Summit with a 63-59 lead with a minute to go. Two free throws by Maloney made it a 6 point lead, then Rahway made a big mistake and was called for a technical foul. Gonzales made both free throws and Summit got the ball and it was all over.
Gonzales had the biggest game of his life and ended with 41 points and 8 rebounds. That edged out Ba’Shawn Mickens (40 points) and Wellington Smith (39) for most points in a game. Maloney led the rebounds with 11. Kaelin also scored in double digits with 10 points.
