| Summit took on Cranford in the 1st round of the Union County Tournament, having lost to Cougars by 10 points in the regular season. Cranford took an early 5 point lead in the 1st quarter (16-11) and fans wondered, not again? Things changed dramatically, Jenny Martino drained a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of field goals and Cassidy O’Malley added 6 points and Summit took the lead 31-29 at the half. The barrage continued in 3rd quarter. Martino hit another three and Christina Richson lit up the gym with 3 straight 3 pointers and Catlin Osmulski also had three. The defense held Cranford to 4 point. So Summit entered the 4th quarter with a commanding 15 point lead.
Baskets by Martino and O’Malley extended the lead to 18 points with less than 6 minutes to go. Summit went into a delay offense to kill the clock and of course Cranford was forced to foul. Sadly, Summit went dry at the foul line. The Hilltoppers missed the front end of 3 one-and-ones and a two shot foul. Meanwhile, Cranford chipped away at what had seemed like an insurmountable lead, scoring the next 15 points. With 23 seconds left in the game Cranford was only 3 points back at 53-50. Martino and O’Malley finally broke the ice, each sinking the second of 2 attempts, to seal the win.
Martino led the scoring with 16 points, but O’Malley (15 points) and Richson (14 points) were close behind.
