| Summit traveled to Johnson for the first round of the Union County Tournament. Will Schaffer took the mound to start. Johnson got on the scoreboard first with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Summit managed one run in the 4th when Andrew Miller led off with a double and eventually scored off an infield out by Alex Crane.
Sadly, Summit’s game went downhill in the 4th inning Johnson surprised Summit by laying three almost perfect bunts to start the inning. The first two were successful and the 3rd bunt moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. A walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch produced 3 runs and brought on Alex Crane in relief. Crane never found his grove and walked 3 of the next 4 batters and was replaced by TimColao. Colao got a strike out to end the inning, but Johnson left with a 6-1 lead.
In the top of the 5th inning the Johnson defense suffered a complete melt down. Summit’s first six batters all got on base via four Johnson errors, a single by Matt Murdock, and a walk. That scored 5 runs and left the score tied 6-6. By the time the inning ended, Summit had a 10-6 lead. Johnson got one back in the bottom of the 5th and held Summit to no more runs the rest of the game. In the bottom of the last, Johnson scored one more to make it 10-8 and then loaded the bases with only one out. The final play of the game was a line drive to second right at Ben Lim who caught it and fired it to first base for the double play and send Summit to the quarterfinal round in dramatic fashion.
