Won 7-0 The big story of the game was pitching. Will Schaffer took the mound against Rahway and was in charge from the start. He took just nine pitches to get a ground out and two strikeouts. The next two innings took just 22 pitches to register 5 more strikeouts and another ground out. With two outs in the 5th Schaffer had a perfect game going, including 12 strikeouts. A mishandled roller down the 1st baseline ended the perfect game run, but did no damage. When Schaffer left the mound after 6 innings he had racked up 14 Ks. Tim Colao pitched the final inning, 3 up-3 down.
The Summit offense started fast with Singles by Matt Murdock and Robby Faris, followed by a Schaffer double. That produced 2 runs. Two walks and a single by Andrew Miller added another run and Summit was up 3-0 . However, Rahway’s pitcher began to find his grove and Summit wouldn’t score again until the 6th. A double by Miller followed by 4 walks, an error and two wild pitches allowed four Hilltoppers to cross the plate.
