Summit (6th seed) took on Colonia (3rd seed) in the first round of the State Tournament. The Star-Ledger picked the game as “one to see” and they were right. It had everything you could hope for in a football game, including cliff hanger finish. Down 20-13 going into the 4th quarter. Summit mounted a drive that moved from the Summit 35 to a 1st down at the Colonia 14. However, two penalties moved the ball back 15 yards and led to 35 yard field goal by Jack Johnson. It was his 3rd of the game, which may be a record for FGs in a single game, and made the score 20-16. Summit forced a “3 and out” and got the ball back at their 28, with a little over 6 minutes left in the game. What followed was an amazing 19 play drive (13 runs by Matt Newman and 6 by Jake Froschauer). Summit eventually had a 1st down at the 11, as the clock was running down. Three plays later it was 4th down at the 4 and there was time for only one more play. The run fell short and the game was over.

Summit took a 3-0 lead in the 1st quarter when a drive sputtered and Johnson kicked a 30 yd field goal. Colonia scored late in the quarter on a option play that went 32 yards. Late in the 2nd quarter a long Summit drive moved from the Summit 22 to Colonia 18 where Johnson kicked a 35 yard FG and the half ended with Summit down 7-6

Summit kicked off to start the 2nd half and quickly forced a punt, but the snap went bad and Summit got the ball at Colonia 3 yd line. Newman scored on the next play. Colonia Mounted two drives on its next two possessions to move ahead 20-13. The 4th quarter was all Summit, but they could only muster 3 points.

Matt Newman had an amazing game, carrying the ball 38 times for 200 yards, plus 2 recptions for 16 yards. Jack Johnson was the leading scorer with 10 points. His kicking kept Summit in the game
