Rahway 0 6 0 6 12
It was obvious early on that scouting information indicated that Rahway’s weak point was pass defence. During the first half passing dominated the Hilltoppers play calling. The first quarter passed with Summit having 3 possessions and going “3 and out” on each. Things began to click with the first possession of the 2nd quarter. Summit mounted a 78 yard drive that required 13 plays. Nine of them were short passes and only four were running plays, including the 2 yard run by Jake Froschauer into the end zone. Jack Johnson added the extra point.

Rahway struck back immediately. They returned the kickoff to the Summit 46 and marched into the end zone on seven running plays. Their missed extra point would turn out to be crucial. Summit appeared to be on the way to answer the Rahway TD on the next possession. Two pass plays (17 yards to Garrett Cahill and 40 yards to Matt Newman) got to the Rahway 9, but a fumble turned the ball over at the 1 yard line. A weak Rahway punt gave Summit another chance. Two passes to Newman setup a 27 yd field goal by Johnson. So the half ended with Summit on top 10-6.

The 3rd quarter was scoreless, but the 4th started with a Rahway turnover that setup another field goal by Johnson to give Summit a 7 point lead at 13-6. After an exchange of punts. Rahway took possession on their six with 6 minutes remaining in the game. That began the most excruciating six minutes this season. It involved 19 plays and five first downs, four 4th down plays, a disputed 4th down measurement, a disputed call on the touchdown pass. Angst was everywhere. With 22 seconds on the clock Rahway scored and the score was 13-12. They set up to kick the extra point and send it to overtime, but Summit blocked the try. The Summit players and fans went nuts.
