| Somerville entered the game with a 1-4 record having only defeated North Plainfield. So when Summit took the opening kickoff and drove for a touchdown in seven plays Summit fans were feeling pretty good. Matt Newman got things rolling when he returned the opening kickoff 49 yards to the Somerville 46. Jake Froschauer ran for the last 6 yards. On Summit’s 3rd possession Summit mounted a 79 yard drive, scoring on a Forschauer pass to Garrett Cahill of 22 yards. It appeared that Summit was on a roll.
However, Summit fans got a glimpse of the future when Somerville scored on an 82 yards Pass play to make the score 14-7. In the 2nd quarter Somerville stalled at the Summit 18 and scored a Field Goal to narrow the gap to 14-10. It appeared that Summit had righted the ship when they mounted a 12 play drive, 11 running and one pass, to go to lockers ahead 21-10. Summit kicked off to start he 2nd half and Somerville race through the Summit defense for an 83 yard TD return. Their kick failed but Somerville was only down 5 points. On Somerville’s next possession the Pioneers went 73 yards in six plays, scoring on a 31 yard pass play. A two 2 point PAT run put Somerville ahead 24-21. Summit tied the score on a 27 FG by Jack Johnson and the 4th quarter began tied 24-24. Somerville began the final 12 minutes with a time consuming drive that eventually consumed 7 minutes. After Somerville got a first down at Summit’s 25 they went to the pass. Three incomplete passes left them facing a 4th and 10 from the 25. The choice was a 42 yard FG attempt or another pass. They choose the pass and it connected for a touchdown. The PAT failed but Somerville held a 30-24 lead, Summit went nowhere on what was their only possession of the quarter and the Pioneers ran out the clock. NOTE: Summit was wearing their black on black jerseys. So I may have mixed up some number. If you find any wrong number discrepancies let me know. |
