Johnson traveled to Summit for the 1st round of the Union County Tournament. They had met twice before this season. Summit won their first meeting and Johnson recently defeated Summit in overtime. The game started badly for Summit as Johnson connected on three consecutive 3-pointers on the way to a 13-9 advantage. Summit came alive in the second quarter behind 8 points by Cassidy O’Malley and 7 points by Christina Richson. Recently returned Catherine Maloney nailed a key trey and Catlin Osmulski added a field goal, as Summit took a 29-26 lead at the half.
Summit turned up the defense in the third quarter, holding Johnson to 5 points. Five different Hilltoppers scored in the 3rd and Summit opened a nice 40-31 lead. In the final quarter Osmulski and Maloney each scored 4 points and when foul time came at the end Richson nailed 5 straight free throws and O’Malley went 4 for 4 from the foul line.
Summit will take on 3rd seeded Cranford in the UCT Quarterfinal round.
