Wow what a ending. For the 3rd time in row Summit won the game with a walkoff hit. For the 2nd game in a row the walkoff single was hit by reliever Kunul Sengupta. This time in the 9th inning.

Will Schaffer had his first start of the season. After three singles to start the game he found his groove and struck out seven of the next eight batter. In the 4th he ran into some trouble as he walked or hit four of the next six batters. Pat Smolyn took over the mound. He pitched the next 2 2/3 innings striking out 7 batters and allowing no runs. Sengupta took over for the 9th inning.

Summit scored 2 runs in the 3rd after walks to Matt Mormack and Matt Moremile and single by Grant Douglas loaded the bases. Schaffer’s sacrifice fly and a Union Catholic error brought in two runs. Summit’s third run came when Douglas got on base via an error and scored on a double by Smolyn.

The game was tied after regulation. In top of the 8th Union Catholic had runners at 2nd and 3rd with two out. UC’s batter stroked a sure hit down the middle. Matt Reddy dived to stop the ball, then got up and threw a rifle shot to 1st base, getting the out in a photo finish.

The winning run in the 9th started when Trever Mutolo got on base via an error and moved to 3rd on a double by Douglas. He scored on Sengupta’s single.
