|
For the 2nd year in a row Summit met Colonia in the in the first round of the State Tournament. Colonia had beaten Summit last year and was coming off a 4 game winning streak, while Summit had lost big in its last game of the regular season. Things were tense as Summit took the opening kick off.
The strategy became clear in the first possession. Give Matt Murdock the ball and throw in an occasional pass. The first drive covered 79 yards, 50 yard on 7 carries by Murdock and a 25 yd pass from Skyler Schulter to Jack Washburn put the ball on the 2 where Jackson Tyler scored. Jack Johnson kicked the first of his 6 perfect extra points.
After a 3 and out by Colonia Summit started its second possession on its 21 yardline. Murdock carried on 9 of the 12 plays, the last being a 13 yard TD run.
When the dust settled, Murdock had carried the ball 33 time and caulked up 188 yards. Summit would score three more times in the in the game. Sam Zanelli’s 25 yard TD run with 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd Quarter ushered in the “mercy” running clock and the game ended quickly.
Summit will take on 2nd seeded Middletown North at their gridiron, probably on Friday.
