Warren Hill failed to make a first down on its fourth possession and Summit got the ball back on its 21. Three runs by Zanelli gave Summit a 1st down at Summit's 43, a 6 yard pass to Matt Murdock plus a penalty to Summit put the ball at the Summit 49. Another pass to Murdock gave him the opportunity to out run the defense for a 51 yard touchdown. Finally, on Warren Hill’s 5th possession, they switched their emphasis to the pass and went 75 yards in 12 plays to score. They missed the extra point and the Half ended with Summit up 14-6.
On Summit’s 2nd possession of the 2nd half Murdock broke loose for a 70 yard TD run. Once he got into the secondary Murdock’s great speed allowed him run away from the Warren Hills’ secondary. Before the 3rd quarter ended Murdock broke loose again for a 52 yard TD run that seemed to put the game out of reach, 28-6. However, Warren Hills delivered a 47 yard run and a 13 yard pass play to quickly score and get back in the game. Mid way through the 4th quarter WH connected with a 34 yard pass to narrow the score to 28-20. Suddenly it was a one TD game.
With 7 minutes left Summit mounted a 12 play, 67 yard drive that saw Zanelli cover the final 17 yards for the score. The drive consisted exclusively of running plays shared by Tyler, Murdock and Zanelli,
Note: Summit is currently in something called the Raritan Conference (of the Mid State 38 group). The conference consists of Summit, Immaculata, Warren Hills, North Hunterdon and Scotch Plains. So, after only three games Summit has clinched at least a tie for the conference title. However, what does the conference even mean? Every two years the conferences are scrambled and Summit is assigned to a different conference. Often, we wind up playing teams that are far away and with which we have zero history. There is little chance to develop rivalries. It seems a shame. Particularly for those of us who remember the Suburban Conference (best conference ever) and the Iron Hills Conference
