The new season opened with an unusual distribution of players on the Varsity bench. There were only 3 returning seniors, a 7 foot senior who had not gone out for the team in the past, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores and 2 Freshmen.
The first quarter got off to a bad start as Cranford grabbed a 16-9 lead. The game turned around in the 2nd quarter as Malcolm Sidebottom drained 3 straight 3-pointers ( to add to the two treys he had in the 1st quarter) and Jack Washburn added 5 points. When the 2nd quarter ended Summit had outscored Cranford 19-4 and Summit led 28-20.
Chip Roriston held the hot hand in the in the 3rd quarter, scoring 11 points. Cranford matched Summit’s 18 3rd quarter points so Summit carried an 8 point lead into the final 8 minutes. Six more points by Roriston, 4 of 4 key free throws by Finbar McCormick and 4 points by Will Schaffer allowed Summit to retain its 8 point lead.
Sidebottom led the scoring with 20 points and Roriston (18 points) and Schaffer (12 points) were also in double digits. Schaffer led the rebounders with eight.
