When Summit and New Providence meet it always generates a lot of interest. There was hardly a vacant seat in the Summit gym as the Pioneers set out avenge it’s earlier loss to the hilltoppers. New Providence got off to a great start with 21 points in the first quarter and a 10 point lead.
The 2nd quarter was closer but the Pioneers added 3 more points to their lead. The 2nd quarter was unusual in that Summit failed to score a single field goal, while they hit on 12 of 12 free throws. As a result Summit had a 13 point hill to climb in the 2nd half.
The 3rd quarter was no help because New Providence added one more point to their lead. In that quarter however, NP was aided by 3 technical fouls that were called against Summit over a space of about 4 minutes. Since no physical action was noted it appeared that something was said that triggered the technical foul calls. New Providence scored on all six of the free throws and, of course, got 3 additional possessions. Before the end of the quarter New Providence was also called for a technical foul. Wow, 4 technical fouls in a single quarter. Eleven of Summit’s 12 points in the quarter were scored by Sophomore Malcolm Sidebottom.
Summit was down by 15 points starting the final eight minutes and the picture looked very bleak. However, led by Will Schaffer’s 10 points, Summit actually closed to with to within 4 points late on the quarter. However, The Pioneers hit on 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch and won by 9 points.
Summit scoring was led by Schaffer and Sidebottom with 19 points each. Schaffer had a game high 13 rebounds. Summit had a bad shooting night, hitting on only 22% of their attempts. Summit also scored on only 8 of 23 three point trys
