Summit (11th seed) took on Barringer (6th seed) in the first round of the NJSIAA North 2 Group 3 Sectional. Alex Boburka was the starting pitcher and had his best outing of the season. He pitched a complete game, gave up only 2 earned runs and allowed only two base runners in final 4 innings. An impressive outing.

Will Hellings singled to start the game, moved to 2nd on a bunt by Danny Isralowitz and scored on Emory Carlson’s single. Summit added another run in the 2nd inning. A walk to Micheal Competiello, Justin Weiss was safe on a fielders choice, a balk advanced Competiello to 3rd. And he scored on another fielders choice by Hellings.

However, Barringer took advantage of some sloppy Summit defense to scored 4 runs over the first 3 innings, only two of them earned. At the end of 3 innings Barringer was on top 4-2. Summit took a lead with 3 runs in the 5th. Hellings and Isralowitz each singled to start the inning. Hellings scored when Matt Reddy was safe on a throwing error by the catcher. A ground out scored the tying run. Trevor Mutolo’s single scored the go ahead run.

Barrenger singled to start their 5th but the player was out trying to steal 2nd on a perfect throw from Weiss to Vlass. That took the steam out of Barringer who manged only one base runner from there to the end of the game.

Summit will play Sommerville on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
