If is very difficult to write about the sad end of Summit’s game against Cranford in the Union County Tournament. Summit carried a 7-3 lead ionto the bottom of the 7th. Will Hellings pitched to the first three batters but had to give up the mound because of the 110 pitch rule with 1 out. Anthony Cusumano took over the pitching mound. The score was 7-4. With two out and two on a slow grounder was hit for the potential 3rd out and victory. In the excitement of the moment the pitcher and the 1st basemen failed to connect on the short toss, and Cranford was still alive. Will Gibson came on in relief. The first batter faced hit a 2-2 count for a Grand Slam to grab victory from defeat.
It was a sad day for the whole team. I feel so sorry for our kids!
Summit scored twice in the 1st inning when Will Helling singled and Danny Isralowitz beat out a bunt, Hellings later scored in infield out and Isralowitz scored on a wild pitch. Cranford tied things in the bottom of the 1st. Summit scored again in the 5th inning. Emory Carlson doubled to start the inning and scored on a single by Isralowitz. Summit enlarged the lead to 4-2 when Andrew Miller and Trevor Mutolo drew walks Miller was driven in on ground ball by Smolyn.
Summit seemingly broke the game open with 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning. Greg Vlass walked to start the inning and Isralowitz doubled to score Vlass. Isralowitz scored when Miller got on base via an error. Mutolo doubled to score Miller. Suddenly Summit held a commanding 7-3 lead going into the final half inning.
Note: Many consider Cranford’s pitcher to be the best in the county.
